The terms adhesion and cohesion, which are used extensively in bonding with glues, should not be mixed with each other.

Adhesion is explained as the sum of the forces that bring the corresponding surfaces together in the adhesion of two substances. In this respect, the two solid atoms cannot be brought closer to each other than a certain level due to their microscopic surface properties, and the glue molecules help in ensuring the bonding along this interface.

Cohesion is the force of attraction between molecules of the same kind of substance. For example; the attraction forces between the glue or water molecules are referred to as cohesion. The resistance of the material against external influences and the ability of its shape to withstand deformation depend on the magnitude of the cohesion forces.
